Top 5 to see and do at Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing
Noosa Festival of Surfing
From sun-up to sun-down, from the points of Noosa National Park headland to the sands of Main Beach, the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing returns to the shores of Laguna Bay from 10-17 March.
This is the 27th annual celebration of everything surfing in Noosa, the latest World Surfing Reserve. The largest surfing event in the world (by competitor numbers) attracts over 500 entries from 17 nations and regions, plus a staggering 15,000 visitors across its jam-packed ‘8 Days of Pure Stoke’, with non-stop action, surf culture, competition, film, live music and entertainment from sun-up to sun-down and beyond.
If the week-long schedule of events is a little too much to take in, don’t panic! We’ve compiled a list of the Top 5 Things to See and Do at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing:
1: The SurfingWell duh, it’s a Festival of Surfing! But the Noosa Festival of Surfing attracts some of the very best male and female longboarders from all around the world. Current world champion Honolua Blomfield (above) from Hawaii has been attending for several years now, and will be back once again in 2018. Finals day, Saturday 17 March will see the cream of the crop across all divisions go head to head and is sure to see some spectacular action.
What is a NevHouse, we hear you ask! Surfboard guru and philanthropist Nev Hyman (above) created the award-winning NevHouse to tackle two serious problems; plastic waste and disaster relief. The NevHouse structures he has created are made from the equivalent of 250,000 plastic water bottles, recycled and repurposed to create multi-purpose shelters that can be easily transported and erected. Nev will unveil the NevHouse on Friday 9 March for the first time in Australia, right on the sand at the Noosa Festival of Surfing.
3: Retail Therapy
Shopping and beach time – two vices that can rarely go together. The first weekend of the Noosa Festival will give you both in one place, with a fantastic Surf Beach Market taking place on Main Beach on 10 and 11 March. A collection of retailers will display their wares on the sand including Golden Breed, Classic Malibu, Bondi Bandits, Underground Surf and many more, so head down, have a browse, have a swim…or both!
4: Canine Capers
There’s no denying it – there’s one group of surfers who draw far more attention each year than anyone else, and they’re the furry, four-legged kind! The VetshopAustralia Surfing Dog Championships are back in 2018 and the afternoon of Saturday 10 March is sure to see a packed house, with standing room only on the beach and along First Point’s shoreline. These hydro-hounds are world-famous and will be back in the waves with their two-legged surfing counterparts for a wonderful display of dog surfing that is almost too cute to believe!
5: Stoke Beyond Sunset
The stoke doesn’t stop when it’s too dark to surf at the Noosa Festival of Surfing, and a crammed schedule of live music, film screenings and events stretches beyond sundown every night. Food stalls will fill your tummies, music will make you move and on Monday 12 March, the Save the Waves Film Festival (above) presented by Noosa World Surfing Reserve has gathered together a great collection of inspirational films for the whole family to enjoy – surfers or not. And the best thing about it is that it’s all 100 percent free!
