Discover Noosa’s lakes – great places to go boating, cast a fishing line, follow a trail, pitch a tent or watch populations of local birds.
Lake Macdonald, a quiet retreat located close to the township of Cooroy, is also a popular place for a picnic or a paddle and to see the resident wildlife. Fishing enthusiasts (armed with a permit and knowledge of fish and size limits) catch Bass, Perch and more in its waters.
Motorboats and swimming are not permitted, so hire a canoe or kayak and grab a map of paddle trails that will help you to navigate to lakeside parks, the Noosa Botanic Gardens, and fishing platforms and creeks.
Lake Macdonald is also a popular destination with 'twitchers' who come hoping to see over 100 species of local birds. Fearnley Bird Hide, on the shore of the lake, is part of the Noosa Bird Trail.
The Noosa River system links three lakes, extending south to Lake Weyba and north to Lake Cooroibah and Lake Cootharaba.

Stretching from Noosaville to Peregian Beach, with much of the shoreline protected by National Park, is Lake Weyba, a large pristine lake with abundant bird life and a wonderful sense of peace and tranquility where visitors can relax and enjoy a different side of Noosa. A great way to explore Lake Weyba is to paddle a canoe through Weyba Creek from the centre of Noosa. Or why not retreat to a cosy lakeside cottage for a romantic getaway.
Hire a canoe or kayak and explore the expansive waters of Lake Cootharaba, a large lake that is about 10 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide with an average depth of about 1.5 metres. Harry’s Hut is a popular campground reached by 4WD or by traversing the upper reaches of the Noosa River, north of Lake Cootharaba. Nearby Lake Cooroibah is the smaller of the two lakes and is ringed by mangroves, tidal flats and eucalyptus forest.
