Noosa’s tourism industry moves to plastic-free
Tourism Noosa has announced a partnership with Plastic Free Noosa as part of an ongoing increased focus on elevating sustainability as a priority within
the broader tourism industry in Noosa.
The partnership will assist Plastic Free Noosa in their efforts to help Noosa restaurants, cafes, markets and events move away from single-use plastic products, replacing them with better environmental alternatives.
Tourism Noosa’s Environment & Sustainability Manager, Juanita Bloomfield, says the partnership is a positive step towards creating a more sustainable impact for Noosa’s environment.
Plastic Free Noosa has already helped local businesses reduce over 1.6 million single-use plastics since February 2018. Many had been thinking about moving away from single-use plastics for some time, but did not know where to start.
Plastic Free Noosa can help businesses implement changes, find the right products and find out how much it will cost. Plastic Free Noosa can provide advice and work with suppliers to make it easier for businesses to make the change
About 150 of Tourism Noosa's members in the restaurant/cafe sector have already come on board to become plastic-free.
Tourism Noosa has also worked with Plastic Free Noosa to enhance our Sustainable Event Guidelines, creating a minimum standard for events in Noosa. This includes switching from plastic to reusable or compostable products.
Tourism Noosa will develop a user-guide and one-on-one mentoring for event organisers, and will help with direct engagement on the ground at events in Noosa.
Other priorities will include driving a reduction in single-use plastic water bottles and education and handbooks for accommodation and tour operators to move towards being plastic-free
