Noosa Regional Gallery presents Newer Documents, 2026, a photography exhibition curated by Sunshine Coast-based photographer Kim Guthrie, from 19 September to 22 November 2026. An opening event will be held on Friday 18 September from 5.30pm.
Inspired by the landmark Museum of Modern Art exhibition New Documents, 1967, the exhibition brings together the work of Tommy Backus, James Bugg, Renata Filippi, Kim Guthrie and Susan Mountford to explore the enduring relevance of documentary photography in contemporary Australia.
Through photographs drawn from urban and regional environments, the exhibition reveals the extraordinary within the ordinary. The artists capture fleeting moments, unexpected details and quiet tensions, inviting viewers to look more closely at the world around them.
Noosa Regional Gallery Director Michael Brennan said the exhibition celebrates photographers whose work is driven by observation, curiosity and attention rather than spectacle.
"Newer Documents, 2026 brings together photographers whose work draws our attention to the ordinary and often overlooked," he said. "Their images invite us to slow down, look more carefully, and discover the remarkable within everyday life."
Noah Becker, Editor of Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art (New York), describes the exhibition as "an argument for the continued relevance of documentary photography in an age saturated by digital images", highlighting its focus on attention, empathy and genuine observation.
Newer Documents, 2026 is on display at Noosa Regional Gallery from 19 September to 22 November 2026. Admission is free.
