The Noosa Biosphere Trails in Kin Kin came alive as Tourism Noosa, industry partners and volunteers rallied for Tourism Noosa’s biannual Tread Lightly Trees for Tourism tree-planting event, making a meaningful contribution to the health and resilience of our local environment.
A total of 500 native trees, representing 32 different species, were planted along the Noosa Biosphere Trails. Over their lifetime, these trees are expected to sequester approximately 62,000kg of carbon, an average of 124kg per tree, delivering long-term environmental benefits for our region.
Participants included event organisers from Noosa Ultra-Trail and IRONMAN (who deliver the Runaway Noosa Marathon and the Noosa Triathlon events), local business owner Tee Tait from Thirlstane Farm, Anne Kennedy and Rex Halverson from ZEN Noosa, and the dedicated team from Noosa & District Landcare who supported and guided the planting efforts.
Local business owner Tee Tait said the morning was incredibly fulfilling: “It was such a rewarding experience and a great feeling to give back to our beautiful environment. Spending time with others who care deeply about this region makes the day even more meaningful.”
Leanna Ali, Ironman Regional Director, Oceania said: “The IRONMAN Group Oceania is proud to once again support the Trees for Tourism planting initiative. We are fortunate to live, work, and play in such an extraordinary location, and we remain committed to doing so in a sustainable and responsible way. This program is an important part of that commitment, and we look forward to continuing our involvement for many years to come.”
Nick Stewart from Noosa Ultra-Trail participated in the day and said: “As Queensland’s largest festival-style trail run event, the Noosa Ultra-Trail is pleased to be able to partner with others in the events industry to help contribute to Noosa’s status as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. With over 100km of trails in the Noosa Hinterland, the Trees for Tourism program which our athletes help finance through our contributions help safeguard Noosa’s unique ecosystems and natural environment through its regeneration efforts”.
This ongoing initiative supports vital revegetation work, helping restore habitat, stabilise soil, cool walking trails, and enhance biodiversity throughout the Noosa Biosphere Reserve.
Since launching in 2019, the Tread Lightly Noosa Trees for Tourism program has achieved impressive results: 8,596 trees available to be planted, $109,970 raised, and more than 1066 tonnes of carbon forecast to be sequestered over the trees’ lifetime. These achievements are made possible through Tourism Noosa’s strong partnership with Noosa & District Landcare.
A heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers and Tourism Noosa members who came together to make this planting event a success. Together, we are continuing to tread lightly and invest in a more sustainable future for Noosa.
